Lenovo has completely reworked on the chassis and it is different from its predecessor the ThinkPad T580. However, the manufacturer has endured the basic construction principle of the T580. The lower half of the ThinkPad T590’s chassis is reinforced by a Magnesium frame, while Lenovo has used glass-fiber reinforced plastic for the outer casing.
Moreover, Lenovo has painted the outer casing with matte black, with a few spots of color. The hinges are decorated in silver colour and have metal caps, whereas the TrackPoint features the traditional red colour. The ThinkPad T580 felt sturdy when we held it in hands and features the widely known industrial design.
For a 15.6-inch business laptop, Lenovo ThinkPad T580 is fairly light. It weighs around 3.85 lbs (1.75 kg) with a thin 19.1mm profile. Surprisingly, its lid can be opened with only one hand, which we found soothing.
The ThinkPad T580 features the typical ThinkPad keyboard with LED-backlight feature. It offers the same clicky feedback and has the same large keys with long-travel keys. Similarly, the Control and Function buttons are reversed in the T580, which are irritating. However, if you are used to ThinkPad laptops, you’ll find it comfortable.
Coming to the touchpad, it is the same with two dedicated buttons on the top. It is responsive and supports multi-touch gestures, thanks to Microsoft Precision Touchpad technology.
The model we tested for this review came with a 15.6-inch wide FHD display. The screen was matte and IPS based, offering a resolution of 1920 x 1080p. Its screen has a 0.18 х 0.18 mm pixel pitch and a density of 142 PPI with a screen ratio of 16:9. Moreover, its screen becomes retina at 24-inch distance and we were able to extract an average screen brightness of 231 nits.
Lenovo ThinkPad T580 comes with enough port selection and most of them are on the left side. On this side, there is a Type-A USB 3.0, Thunderbolt 3 and a Type-C USB 3.1 Gen. 1 port. In addition, there is a combo audio port, an HDMI and a microSD card reader.
On the right side, the ThinkPad T580 houses another Type-A USB 3.0 port, Smartcard reader, Kensington lock and an RJ45 connector.
Lenovo has armed the ThinkPad T580 with Core i5 8th generation CPU that runs on the Windows 10 Pro operating system. This is a quad-core processor that can deliver clock speed ranging from 1.6GHz to 3.9GHz. To further spice up things, there is a 256GB SSD storage drive paired with an 8GB RAM.
This is a powerful combination of hardware for a business laptop at this price. Lenovo has made sure that the user enjoys a smooth, high-speed performance. Additionally, there are extra security features to protect your files and business data. On the right side, there is the Kensington lock slot and the smartcard-slot that supports two-factor authentication.
Moreover, there is a fingerprint sensor for additional security as well as an infrared camera. You can use the infrared camera feature with Windows Hello for fast login in case you don’t want to use the fingerprint reader.
Lenovo has added a 57Wh battery in the ThinkPad T580 that can deliver up to 15 hours of battery life. This is quite impressive for a business laptop as you can use the laptop all day long once it is fully charged.
Overall, Lenovo ThinkPad T590 is a good choice for IT professionals and businessmen. This is a Windows 10 Pro laptop that features high-end specs, can deliver high-speed performance without lagging and features a long-lasting battery. However, its biggest advantage is the extra security features that you are hard to find on laptops with the same price tags.
