Some people will ask if search engine optimization is worth doing, to increase traffic to your website. The answer really is that it is and it can be done very cheaply. Mainly the work starts before you even construct your website.
You should have just enough knowledge to put your website together and ready to go. To get to optimization you should build links already, and it does not mean you have to build links with only the search terms you are going for.
If you know what you are doing, and have the resources, you should be able to get on page one already. To get to the front page you will have to build links. A lot of people will argue that building links is the hardest part of SEO and that it takes months and even years to get good rankings.
That is true, but you can do it in just a few days and build thousands of links to your website. All you have to do is choose a few keyword phrases that you want to rank for. Then build links using those keyword phrases as the anchor text.
When you are starting out with SEO, you want to start small and then build more links as you get better. If you are trying to rank for terms that are with little to no competition, I would just be mixing in those search terms with a backlink profile that looks natural.
So let’s say you are ranking for a search term that has a medium to high competition. You can try to rank for that term, and then gradually increase your reach by adding more content and backlinks. Then you can be pushed to the front page, or close to it, by adding more elements of your site that are natural.
Now, one of the most important elements to a site in order to rank well, are the internal links. This usually comes from the fact that it gives you a very good idea of what is going on in that site. It is like a secret algorithm that tells you what the site is all about and what it offers.
So for example, if you go to Google and search for “home business” you will see that the first listing is for that famous entrepreneur W firms. You can guess that it is his home business; however, it is a close second. You can see that the title page is rail thin and doesn’t really give you any information at all. And that is why so many people lose so much money in their Google sitemaps.
Now, let’s say you click on the search button and you end up at this page:
Your Website Adhere
This is the page from the website that is supposed to give you some jewelry on that subject. Notice it mentions the word jewelry only once and you already know he is going to send you there because of it. This is what you are looking for. This is where you can tell the search engines what your website is about.
You need to put that keyword phrase in your title page, and you want to make sure that it is in the description page as well. Now, you don’t want to repeat that phrase more than 1 or 2 times; otherwise, you may set off spam filters from the search engines. That is what I did the first time I tried it and I ended up with a lot of work to remove it.
What you also need to do is make sure that you have done your keyword research and that the keyword phrase is in your domain name. But make sure it doesn’t look “keyword stuff” or it will be seen as black hat SEO. You can also raise the CTR (Click Though Rate) but that is unimportant for my purposes today.
What you can do is just shoot for a few tests with AdWords until you can see that the results are improving. If they are not, you can go back and undo whatever you did that caused the site to not engage the traffic. Do you see your traffic increases? That means your oncoming links are working and that Google thinks your site is one of authority sites for the keyword you are shooting for.
All this can take time, but if Google wants to send you traffic, you need to be able to get on first page of the search engines. So when you have your site optimized for a certain keyword, do the next best thing. Work to build quality links pointing to your website. This can be through writing articles, social bookmarking, blog commenting, or even creating a viral magnet by using YouTube and interacting with your subscribers.
The best thing you can do for your website and your attempts at Google first page domination is to take the time to do onsite optimization. This will ensure your Google search result rankings will stay at the top.
